Wooden Ships Comments on this Roger Dongray Golant Gaffer
Golant gaffer designed by Roger Dongray and built by the current owner between 1998 and 2006. Although an amateur build she has been completed to a very high standard.
The owner consulted with Dongray regarding several alterations to the design which have given her more interior space and have increased the performance greatly. The obvious difference is the raised coachroof with bronze portholes to increase space and headroom below. Secondly the hull has 2 layers rather than a single layer of epoxy cloth on the outside and a single layer internally up to waterline level. Minor change to front bulkhead to allow better chain locker access. Lastly the entrance hatch has been made slightly wider and she has extra cockpit lockers.
Therig is the standard design except thatshe has a carbon fibre gaff yard to reduce weight aloft and carbon fibre bowsprit. And the sail area has been increased slightly by maximising the luff lengths all with the aim of improvingperformance while staying in class
The result is a very attractive and practical small cruising yacht, nicely finished and with very satisfying performance. The Golant Gaffer is a very practical sailing yacht for the modern world and can provide an awful lot of fun in a small package. She comes with a road trailer which makes annual care and maintenance very simple and cost effective
