Description and Identification ‘Saraffina’ is a sloop rigged day-sailing yacht, designed by B L Dunphy and built by Wm Partington Marine of Pwllheli around 1960. The round bilge hull has a spoon bow, long keel and a counter stern. The superstructure consists of fore, side and aft decks, the small coachroof and the open cockpit. The yacht is fractional sloop rigged. There is no installed engine. Construction The hull is of typical carvel timber construction. The centreline, garboards and sheer-strake are of teak; the remainder of the planking is of pitch pine. The planking is copper clench fastened to closely spaced steam- bent oak ribs, and screw fastened to grown oak floors. The lead keel is fastened with aluminium bronze bolts. The deck is of plywood on oak and pine beams. The coachroof and cockpit coamings are of teak, the roof is of plywood. The cockpit coamings are capped by brass convex strips. There is a gunmetal stemhead roller, bronze forestay fitting, oak mooring post and stern cleat, stainless steel chain plates, teak coachroof handrails and toerails, stainless steel mainsheet horse. Chrome plated sheet winches. Stainless steel single height guardrails wires and stanchions and pulpit. A single acrylic portlight is fitted in each side of the coachroof. The mast and boom are of spruce, with an aluminium headsail reefing system, and stainless steel standing rigging. It is understood that there is a suit of recent sails. Finishes The topsides are finished in white enamel with a dark green top strake. The bottom is coated with green antifouling. The hull interior is painted white. The deck and cabin roof are painted with fawn deck paint; the coachroof sides, coamings and toerails are varnished. Mike Fox FellowoftheYacht

BritishRegistry Over thirty years in the Marine Industry 3 Interior There are single berths to port and starboard inside the cuddy, constructed of varnished mahogany plywood. The plywood sole boards are painted with fawn deck paint. There are large bench seats along each side of the cockpit. Machinery and Electrics The inboard engine has been removed. The stern tube is still fitted, but the stern gland and outboard bearing housing have been removed, and the propeller aperture in the aft deadwood and rudder have been filled and faired with timber. There is no electrical system. Equipment There is a brass clock and barometer, a hand bilge pump; no other loose equipment has been seen. Overall Condition The paint and varnish coatings are generally in good order, although there is some minor cracking of the paint along the seams. On the starboard quarter, five nail fastenings heads in a vertical row have been stopped up with non-matching stopping. Some of the hull bottom seams have opened, but should ‘take up’ once the yacht is afloat. There are hairline cracks in the top veneer of the forward deck and cabin roof plywood. On the interior of the hull, nine adjacent ribs on the port quarter are cracked. Four short additional ribs have been fitted between them. There are other randomly located cracked ribs, mainly on the starboard side. Discussion ‘Saraffina’ is one of a small series of almost identical yachts built by Partington Marine. The first in the series, ‘Sara Bach’ was designed and built to a specific brief, that of day-sailing and pleasure fishing from a deep-water mooring in Nefyn on the Lleyn Peninsular. Day-sailers of this size and type are rare; the closest comparable designs are the day-racing yachts of which many were designed in the 1930s. Although the inboard engine has been removed, it would not be difficult to re-install an engine, and easier still to fit an outboard on a bracket. The yacht has been in commission in recent years, based in Pwllheli, and is therefore assumed to have all the equipment needed for engine-less gentle day-sailing. ‘Saraffina’ is an almost unique example of a gentleman’s yacht from a previous era.
