Wooden Ships Comments
Built in 1933 by Uphams of Brixham, she was one of a small number of boats built on the lines of the Brixham Sailing Trawlers but launched as yachts for wealthy owners.
Charmian has always attracted attention wherever she goes as one of the most elegant and graceful gaff ketch yachts it is possible to design. The interior joinery was fitted by Camper and Nicholson after her launch but sadly only a few of these original panels remain.
The current owner bought her from France in 2010, had a new engine fitted and steamed her back to the UK for repair work to be done. Unfortunately various circumstances prevailed and the work was never finished, leaving her with a temporary deck to keep the water out and the ship laid up afloat. She is now in need of a sympathetic new owner with the means to take on a large rebuild project of this nature and save an iconic vessel from being scrapped.
Length on Deck 64' + bowsprit
Traditionally built in carvel planking, believed to be pitch pine, on heavy sawn oak frames.
Lots of replacement planking done in 2012. A recent inspection has found some areas of soft planking that need to be addressed.
Internal ballast of 20 tons comprising of mixed iron and lead.
The current deck is temporary to keep her dry and will need replacing with a proper deck. All the deck beams however are new and in place.
Most of the timber for the bulwark planking is with the boat.
All stanchions have been made in oak and are ready to fit.
The rebuilt dog house and several other teak hatches and skylights are included with her.
Designed for a gaff ketch rig on solid keel stepped masts.
Some parts of the rig will go with the boat but it is not complete.
Beta Marine 150hp diesel, installed new in 2011 but with very low hours.

New stainless steel fuel tanks.
