Boat Description

1958 Classic Wooden Twin Screw Motor Yacht for sale.
Designed and built for the Great George Formby actor and entertainer she was originally called Lady Beryl 2 after George’s formidable wife Beryl.
Based on a Norfolk Broads Cruiser she was twin screw and built for the sea. However, on her maiden voyage the story goes that Mrs Formby did not enjoy it so it returned to the broads and was used as a holiday boat.
Beryl died in 1960 and a few months later just as George was about to marry his new young bride, he died and as part of his estate the boat was put on the market in 1961.
It was reported in the press to have been sold to a mystery buyer however the Lloyds register shows this to have been Mr. George Brown.
In the Seventies the boat was used as it was intended entering various sea events like the Heineken Amsterdam rally and made various sea and channel crossings.
The current owners bought her from their good friends Phil Ryan and Eunice Mountjoy in 1988 on the agreement she would be loved and looked after as they would have. Philip Ryan, a local boat builder, unfortunately died in 1999 and the boat remains a reminder of how Philip would have liked it to have been remodelled.
Since 1988 she has been a frequent visitor to Messer’s Michael Dennets & Co, and for over 20 years, Steven Dennet has worked with his team to bring her up to a current condition which is pretty close to completion but as with all wooden boats, is a never ending quest.
The Revamp began firstly by removing the steadying mast and levelling the rear cabin roof with teak decking. This allowed the installation of a flying bridge complete with screen and helmsman station which was something Phil had always felt the boat was crying out for.
On the interior forward we replaced her hip bath with a wet room and revamped her tired main bedroom which has a full sized double bed, wardrobe and dressing table all in lavish Cherry wood.
The central wheelhouse has been kept as it was so to speak with the floor being replaced and a general tidying up of the equipment and re-varnishing and painting of the roof.
Astern, she has had a similar modernising with the galley being given a more open plan layout with new built-in cupboards in solid mahogany.
The rear of the cabin has had the sides re-panelled in oak and various cupboards re-vamped with a modern bar and TV cabinet in-stalled in order not to spoil the overall look of the interior.
More recently all the teak decks forward and aft have been completely replaced and the whole boat repainted and re-varnished. She has her original 130 BHP Perkins SM6 Engines which were re-built some 10 years ago and has a top speed of 9.5 knots cruising at 7 knots.
In 2012 ‘Carole Ann of Hamble’ was added to the National Register of Historic Vessels.
She remains a joy to own..
