Wooden Ships Comments on the Lymington Slipway 5 ton Bermudan Sloop
The Lymington Slipway 5 tonner was designed by George Kennedy O'Brien as an easily handled and well performing sloop. 29 boats were built in Lymington between 1947 – 1951, with one example winning the Gold Roman Bowl in the 1954 Round the Island Race, owned and sailed by Helen Tobin.
This yacht was built by a retired headmaster between 1977 and 1979, helped by his brother who had worked on building the original boats. She was used for many years as a family cruising boat, sailing nearly every year to the Baltic in the summer holidays.
Bought by the preset owners in 2011 having been ashore for 11 years, they undertook a major refit and relaunched her in June 2012. The refit included a new engine, new electrics, recovering the decks and carrying out a complete cosmetic refit.
She has since been sailed around the south Wales coast but a growing family has forced her to be placed on the market
