Boat Description

Wooden ships comments on this Holman Sterling Bermudan Sloop
Designed by Kim Holman, built by his brother Jack at his Uphams Yard, Brixham in 1965, the last of 19 Sterlings built. The Sterling is often thought of as a cruising version of the famous Twister.
Planked in mahogany above the water-line, pitch-pine below water-line all copper fastened to Canadian rock elm steamed timbers on an oak back-bone.
Varnished mahogany transom with transom-hung rudder.
2 ton, full length iron ballast keel. One galvanised steel keel bolt drawn in 2002. Several lead pigs internal trimming ballast.
Oak floors with a few galvanised steel strap floors in the ends.
Deck in grp sheathed ply with varnished teak toe rail. Pair of alloy mooring cleats on the aft deck, single mooring cleat on the fore deck. Twin roller stainless steel stemhead fitting also takes the fore stay. A clear and uncluttered deck.
Stainless steel pull-pit, push-pit and stanchions with twin guard wires.
Varnished teak cabin coamings extend oft to form the cock-pit coamings. 2 short rectangular windows and one long one in bronze frames. Varnished, laminated hanging knees inside either side of the mast and forward.
Cabin roof in sheathed ply. Pair of vents on Dorade boxes. Teak grab rails each side.
Varnished teak, forward hinged fore hatch with deadlight on the fore end of the coach-roof.
Deep self-draining cock-pit with scrubbed, teak-faced ply lids and deep drains to the seat lockers each side.
Step with fold-down teak flap and twin teak doors to the cabin. Sliding hatch in a garage and spray deflectors each side of the hatch to keep the cock-pit dry. Cock-pit cushions.
Bermudian sloop masthead rig on a brand new alloy mast with new alloy boom
Stainless steel standing rigging, all new and never used
Fore stay with Furlex 200S roller furling gear.
Pair of Gibb top action, alloy, halyard winches on the mast.
Pair of bronze Lewmar top action sheet winches on the cock-pit coamings with adjacent cleats.
Headsail sheets led through cars on tracks on the toe rails.
Brand new mainsail and genoa, still in their bags and never set in anger.
Crusing chute from a J90, one season old.
Original Ratsey sails also available as spares.
Yanmar 1GM10 1 cylinder 10hp diesel engine installed new in the spring of 2008.
Centre-line stainless steel shaft in conventional tube and gland to 3 blade bronze prop.
20 litre plastic fuel tank in the after end of the std cock-pit locker.
New fuel filter with water trap easily accessed alongside the engine.
Bronze sea water intake sea cock with filter.
Domestic water tank, Flexi, in bilge. 100 litres.

Port heads compartment with new 2008 Jabsco sea toilet, lockers under the side deck, plastic bowl in a fold-down support bracket the corner. Heads door folds round to close off the saloon cabin so that a spacious athwartships ablutions compartment can be created with both doors closed in the bulkheads. Also makes the heads accessible in private to either the forward or saloon cabins and gives double doors between the 2 cabins.
Saloon cabin with port and stbd settee berths, shelf up behind each side.
3 lockers in the seat backs with upholstered locker doors to form the seat backs.
Varnish teak-edged half bulkheads with trotter boxes under.
Large port chart desk with varnished mahogany front, chart drawer under.
2-level galley shelf to stbd. Gimballed 2-burner gas cooker on the lower shelf. Plastic bowl sits on the upper level with a hand pump from the water tank or the shelf can be used for food prep work.
Plate stowage and a locker under the side deck.
Engine box step between up to the cock-pit removes for good all round access to the engine.
The galley surfaces are finished in white formica, the bulkheads in white painted ply, the teak coamings are varnished with white painted deckhead and scrubbed teak cabin sole.
15 gall galvanised steel water tank under the sole.
Eberspacher diesel fired hot air cabin heater.

In only fourth ownership from new, this is a simple and little altered example of this very attractive design. The Sterling is surprisingly spacious, comfortable for 4 with excellent performance and ability. A very steady, easily sailed yacht but still fast and close winded if required. Ideal first cruising yacht.
Sold by Wooden Ships to the present French owner, she has been refitted, brought up to a very tidy standard but is now regrettably for sale due to ill-health before the owner has had any time to sail her after his hard work.
