Wooden Ships Comments on this Harry Feltham Bermudan Cutter
28' Harry Feltham bermudan cutter designed and built by Feltham of Portsmouth in 1929. A solid and pretty cruising yacht which has been in the present ownership for 30 years. She underwent a major refit in 1994 when the keel was dropped off, the hull strengthened, a new deck put on and a new engine fitted. She has been well cared for and cruises regularly with the owners either in the West Country or on the East coast. 2004 survey available.

Planked in pitch pine all copper rivet fastened to closely spaced steam bent oak timbers.
Grown oak floors across the centreline.
External iron ballast keel with steel keel bolts which were last drawn in 1994. Some internal lead ballast.
During the 1994 refit the hull was strengthened with new bilge stringers bolted through the hull with bronze bolts. Some steel work was also added on the centre line forward of the mast for strengthening.
Decks and cockpit
Yacht laid teak deck over a marine plywood sub deck, new in 1994. Swept teak deck joggled to a king plank with varnished cover boards and margin boards and a varnished teak toe rail.
The cockpit was constructed in 1994 at the same time as the new deck and is a deep and safe design with thwarts either side and a bridge deck. Varnished teak cockpit coamings with lockers under the side decks.
Varnished teak coachroof coamings with round bronze port holes. Sheathed plywood coachroof deck finished in deck paint. Coachroof deck new in 2012. Varnished teak sliding hatch on the centreline for the companionway.
Varnished teak hatch on the foredeck.
Bermudan cutter rig on a keel stepped solid wooden mast with a varnished wooden slab reefing boom.
Stainless steel standing rigging with spliced eyes to stainless rigging screws and external bronze chain plates. Single spreader with twin lower shrouds and a single cap shroud Standing backstay to a bumpkin with running backstays on bronze Highfield levers on the side decks. Inner forestay to the stemhead with hanked on staysail. Outer forestay integral with the jib has a Wickham Martin furling system.

2 x mast winches and 2 x cockpit sheet winches.
BMC 1.5 4 cylinder diesel engine installed in 1994. Fresh water cooled with a heat exchanger. Single lever control to a centreline stainless steel shaft and 3 blade bronze propellor gives cruising speed of 5 knots and max 7 knots.
25 gallon stainless fuel tank under the cockpit locker.
25 gallon stainless water tank under opposite cockpit locker.
2 x 12 volt batteries in the starboard cockpit thwart.
4 berths with twin V-berths in the forepeak and 2 saloon settee berths.
The wide coachroof opens up the interior below giving her an open feeling of space. Single set of steps down from the bridge deck into the saloon with the galley to port. The settee berths are slightly offset with the port side going further forward to allow space for the galley. Wide cabin sole with painted sole boards. Chart desk to port at the forward end of saloon with a drop down chart desk hinged off the bulkhead.
Passageway to starboard of the mast into the forepeak. Hanging locker to starboard in way of the mast. Heads to port forward of the mast.
Flavel 2 burner gas stove on a gimbal with a fold up table attached to the bulkhead. Bronze tap on the aft bulkhead from the water tank.
Sea toilet which pumps directly overboard in a separate compartment.
