Owners Comments/History
Storebro Royal Cruiser 34
Marand of Kip
The Marand of Kip (M of K) was built in Sweden by Storebro in 1974.
Storebro built around 800 Royal Cruiser 34s giving owners a choice of wooden or GRP hulls about two thirds were mahogany on oak frames. The boats have serious sea keeping capabilities and won all sorts of passage making trophies in the late 70s and early 80s. They are also ideal for coastal cruising and inland waterways.
There is an active owners club (based in Germany) and the M of K is a registered club boat. She is slightly special being a (mark 1 and a half model in that a wider mark 2 pilot console has been factory installed but the rest of the design (forward facing air vents etc.) is mark one.
In 11 years of ownership, we have pieced most of the history together. The boat was first registered in Scotland in Inverkip (by Mary and Andrew ?). She was used extensively in the Mediterranean and the Adriatic (hence extra-large fresh water tanks) before being based in France.
A new owner (mid 80s) moved her to Dartmouth and completed many channel crossings before selling her once again to a Scottish owner who kept her on Holy Loch on the Clyde. Since 2008 the boat has been exclusively on the Thames (tidal and occasionally non-tidal) and kept at Shepperton Marina, so only fresh water used for the last 10 years.
BSSC accreditation required extensive upgrades to multiple components especially fuel, electrical and gas systems and the installation of a holding tank.
Over recent years, the boat has been re-built in many areas to an extremely high standard as the wooden construction was inevitably showing signs of age. All work professionally carried out by Otter Marine, Port Hampton (restorers of wooden boats) most recently this year and has included:
Complete new teak decks including sub decks, beam shelf and toerail
New stern posts, quarter planking, rub rails, spray rails, hull planking and sistered oak ribs
Complete new mahogany transom down to keel
Cabin and wheelhouse sides repaired, stripped to bare wood and Coelan treated
New bespoke Houdini manufactured windows to wheelhouse, saloon and aft cabin
